after washington dc that follows suit, that follows washington dc, so again a little like the giants that want to be number one. today is december, 12, 2012 which is 12-12-12. kind of scary. i would like to quote rem. "it's the end of the world as we know it but we're just fine". we are just fine because we're beginning really 12 months that will be exciting and fun for all of us. as you all have mentioned italians have made a lasting contributions in building this city, and in making what it is, the city that is international, innovative and open. it's difficult to name names but let me mention angela rosy and judge misconnie and in city hall and in the hearts and minds of san franciscans. let me mention ap geny and found an important bank and the inventor what we call the micro credit and helped the city recover from the big earthquake of 1906. guy mo roller who was the founder, established the opera in san francisco, by the way there's an italian directing the opera and laurence fergetty and 93 and good friend of the community. he is the father of the b generations and the guy tha

we are very honored today that tom perez has come from washington, dc, to give welcoming remarks here at this summit. tom perez is the assistant attorney general of the civil rights division in washington, dc, he was nominated for that position by president obama and sworn in in october of 2009 and we are all the lucky -- we are all very lucky that that happened in october of 2009. tom has spent his entire career in public service and on protecting the civil rights of our most vulnerable people. tom actually joined the civil rights division as a young lawyer and while he was there he prosecuted some of the most significant cases in the country. lawyers in the civil rights division get fanned out to places in the country to handle cases in mississippi and alabama and california and all over and tom was one of those people. he was sent to texas to handle a very significant hate crime case when he was a young lawyer that involved a gang of white supremacists that went on a killing spree and ended up shooting 3 people and killing one when he was a young lawyer working in the civil rights

really talked b as a result of that we were invited to the federal summit a year ago in washington dc, and i have to tell you after sitting and hearing a day of stories of all of our children i came away with just something in my stomach that just couldn't let it go. that, this was something that ready had to be addressed and this what was i was going to focus on. at the time we were trying to pursue some federal legislation to protect children with special needs. that wasn't going anywhere. as i heard in the federal summit and heard the issues around the definition of bullying, concerns about policies and procedures, seemed like a lot of people blaming everyone. parents blaming schools and schools blaming parents. there seemed to be a lot of confusion and noise out there and i will never forget at the last session secretary duncan got up and said "this issue is really a very complex issue, and the only way it's going to get addressed is back in your community". well, i took that to heart because i realized that's what needed to be done, and that's why i came back to san mateo county
